Festa Italiana Celebrating Milwaukee's Italian Heritage

La Grande Parata della Festa Italiana
The Grand Parade at Festa Italiana

Plans are under way for la Grande Parata della Festa Italiana 2012 (the Grand Parade of Festa Italiana 2012).  Festa’s enchanting parade will wind its way through the grounds each evening at 5:30, celebrating la nostra comunità (our community), la famiglia (family), la cultura d’Italiana (Italian culture)!

Filling the air with both traditional and modern Italian music, the parade will feature Entertainers traveling to Milwaukee from Italy.  Also featured in the parade are Tradizione Vivente, an outstanding Italian Dance Group here in Milwaukee, the Regional and Renaissance Italian Dance Group, I Bei Bambini (Children’s Italian Dance Group), Carnevale Royalty from the Italian Community Center, La Banda Siciliana di Chicago (the talented Sicilian Band), Clowns, Jugglers, Baton Twirlers, an absolutely beautiful Children’s Float, and our own Sicilian Carretto (Cart), with, of course, Pinocchio, Geppetto, the Blue Fairy and Topo Gigio leading the way.

It is so important that Festa continue to celebrate the music, culture, food and spirit of Italy, and that as a community, we embrace family and good friends.  We will do everything we can to create a festive atmosphere and fond memories that the guests of Festa will enjoy and remember throughout the year.  We hope you join us in the celebration.  A presto!

Calling all clowns!

Can you juggle or make balloon animals or hats?  Ride a unicycle?  Walk on stilts?  Are you really funny and do you enjoy entertaining people?

We are looking for clowns for the Parade at Festa Italiana 2012.  Your full costume & face paint will be provided, if necessary.  Payment:  Festa Entrance & Parking Tickets and the Opportunity to Entertain the Public.

If you don't feel you would be right for the role, do you know someone who is?

Searching for Parade Floats!

Do you have access to a parade float that we might be able to borrow or rent in July 2012 for our parade?  If you do not, do you know of an organization, company or person who does?  This is the 4th year of the Festa Italiana Parade, so I hope to add beautiful floats each year that will make our parade really special.

Please consider lending us a float to be used in our parade.  We will treat it with the utmost respect and take meticulous care of it.

Calling All Children!

We hope to have the same spirit and enthusiastic participation that we were blessed with in 2011, and MORE.  Possibly new floats.  New characters to join the others.  Jugglers, baton twirlers, puppets, dancers and stiltwalkers.  And MORE CHILDREN.

We invite all children to march in the Grand Parade wearing either an Italian costume or a clown costume.  Festa Italiana is just a few months away, so there is no better time to get ready than now.  Search online for a colorful clown costume or Italian costume.  Search the shops.  Have nonna make an Italian costume – a labor of love that will surely result in an amazing costume.

We would love to have as many children as possible march in the parade.  Imagine how happy and festive and touching our parade will be with the sweet faces of 75 – 100 children.

That is our dream.  Help us realize it.

Topo Gigio

The cuddly little mouse with a big heart (a.k.a. "The Little Italian Mouse") was the creation of the troupe of puppeteers that debuted on CBS's THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW on April 14, 1963.

Standing ten inches high and made of a half pound of foam rubber, Topo Gigio was controlled by sticks not strings (unlike most puppets).  Three expert puppeteers manipulated Topo with their hands and three inch sticks while garbed in black hoods/black velour clothing, and working against a black backdrop (so they were invisible to the audience).

Maria Perego, Topo's creator, moved Topo's mouth and feet, Frederico Giolo guided Topo's hands and his wife Annabella, controlled the puppets oversized ears.  Topo's voice was provided offstage by Guiseppe Mazullo.

Each week, as part of the show, the adorable little mouse would appear on stage and greet the stone-faced Mr.

Sullivan with a sugary "Hello, Eddie!"  Topo, who often spoke of his girlfriend, Rosey, closed his weekly visits by saying "Keesa me goo'night, Eddie."  Topo appeared 92 times and closed the final 1971 episode of ED SULLIVAN SHOW.

Topo also appeared in the Italian made-movie Le Avventure di Topo Gigio - later released in the USA in 1965 as The Magic World of Topo Gigio.
